eBay & Poshmark fee optimization: 8 checks before you list
Most marketplace fees are fixed by policy, but how much of them you actually pay depends on listing and pricing choices. This is a practical checklist — eight places where sellers commonly leave money on the table, on the two platforms this site covers. None of these change the rates themselves; they change what the rates apply to.
eBay
1. Stay inside the free-listing quota
Standard accounts get 250 zero-fee insertions a month; past that, each listing costs $0.35. Listing in batches by month, and not spreading one product across duplicate listings, keeps you under the line. Store-subscription sellers have a different quota and fee table entirely — worth pricing out once your volume is steady, comparing the subscription cost against the insertion and final-value-fee differences on eBay's store fee page.
2. Watch the fixed fee on low-price items
The per-order fee steps with order size — $0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 above. On a $15 order (a $10 item plus $5 shipping) it is about 3% by itself, before the 13.6% final value fee. Very low-priced items carry proportionally the heaviest fees, so bundling small goods into one order dilutes the fixed fee across more value.
3. Price shipping with the fee base in mind
The 13.6% final value fee applies to item price plus shipping. Underpricing shipping to look cheaper does not avoid the fee — it just shrinks the same base. Charge what shipping costs; the fee percentage is the same either way.
4. Know when the international fee applies
A buyer whose registered address is outside the US adds an 1.65% fee on the order. You cannot switch a buyer's country, but you can anticipate it: for listings that attract international buyers, either price the 1.65% into the item or restrict to domestic shipping — decide deliberately rather than discovering the fee after the sale.
5. Set promoted-listing ad rates deliberately
Promoted Listings charge your chosen ad rate only when an ad click leads to a sale. A high ad rate on an already popular listing pays for traffic that would have arrived anyway — start rates low, watch which listings actually convert from ads, and treat the ad rate as a cost line in the same break-even math as everything else.
Poshmark
6. Price around the flat-fee cliff
Under $15 the platform takes $2.95 flat; above it, 20%. Listings priced a step above the threshold can net more than ones priced just under it — and bundling two small items into one order over the threshold converts two flat fees into one percentage fee. The arithmetic is in the pricing method guide.
7. Keep shipping on the buyer by default
Poshmark's standard structure has the buyer covering the prepaid shipping label, and the 20% commission applies to the item price only. When you offer a discounted or covered shipping promotion, treat the shipping cost you absorb as a straight cost line against the sale — it comes straight off your net.
8. Budget offers before you list
Offers to likers are central to how Poshmark selling works, and a discounted sale pays commission on the discounted price. A listing with thin margin at full price goes negative on the first discount, so set the list price with your typical offer discount already inside it.
